This article tells the story of the restoration of Lignite Louie, Estevan’s longtime coal miner mascot, after years of weather damage and vandalism left the 10-foot-tall figure in poor condition. The City of Estevan partnered with local artist Blane Fichter and BK Creations to completely rebuild the statue, replacing its rotted interior with a strong steel and concrete structure while carefully restoring its original appearance. The project also celebrated the history of coal mining in the Estevan-Bienfait area and the workers who inspired the mascot when it was first created in 1971. Once reinstalled at the Souris Valley Museum, the renewed Lignite Louie will serve as a lasting tribute to the region’s mining heritage and a landmark for visitors.
